Set among Angophoras on a gently sloping site, this new home replaces an old, deteriorating cottage with a high-performing, mid-century modern-inspired design. The project focuses on a modest footprint, allowing the budget to prioritise advanced construction techniques and sustainable materials that enrich the living environment.
The reimagined layout extends the original footprint to create open-plan living spaces, while a second story features a private parents’ retreat with an ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, and home office overlooking a rooftop garden. The original sunken lounge has been incorporated as a media room, maintaining a nod to the home’s history and a new sandstone fireplace, crafted from the original garden paths, takes pride of place.
A biophilic approach ensures seamless transitions between indoors and the expansive garden, facilitated by floor-to-ceiling, high-performance, double-glazed sliding doors and windows. Insulated concrete floors, along with comprehensive wall and roof insulation, regulate interior temperatures. Solar panels power an HRV system and a compact air conditioning unit, promoting good air quality and energy efficiency while minimising operating costs.
